Coursera is pleased to announce that it is extending its partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, providing free access to Coursera for Campus to all Ukrainian higher education institutions and their students until July 31st, 2024.
The partnership was launched in March 2022 in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Since then, Coursera has worked closely with the Ministry of Education and Science and 250+ Ukrainian universities and higher education institutions to offer students and faculty members unlimited access to more than 5,500 courses and 3,400 guided projects. To date, approximately 54,000 Ukrainian learners have benefitted from the free initiative, taking part in more than 175,000 courses. There are now over 1 million Ukrainian learners registered on the Coursera platform.
To better serve the local needs of Ukrainian learners and institutions, Coursera has also translated more than 4000 courses into Ukrainian and launched new AI-powered features to make online learning more personalized and interactive. Now, popular courses like The Science of Well-Being from Yale University, AI for Everyone from DeepLearning.AI, and What is Data Science? from IBM, which have until recently been available only in English, are accessible to anyone who speaks Ukrainian.
"We are honored to continue our partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine to ensure that Ukrainian students have access to the highest quality education during these challenging times," said Jeff Maggioncalda, Coursera CEO. "Coursera remains committed to supporting their educational journey and empowering them with the skills needed to thrive. To further support Ukrainian learners, we have used the power of AI to translate over 4,000 courses into Ukrainian, giving the country’s learners unprecedented access and flexibility to develop skills for their future."
The war has disrupted thousands of students across the country, for whom online learning access has offered them pathways to continuing their education and access transformative employment. For Maksym Natalchuk, a graduate in IT from Kyiv Polytechnic, the war left him without a job. Maksym turned to online learning to gain skills for roles that were in high demand, studying 8-12 hours a day for four months, earning 16 professional certificates in the process and going on to land his dream job as a data analyst at an international consultancy. Maksym says “In March 2022 I signed up for Google's data analysis certification on the Coursera platform and, since then, I’ve been learning online every day.”
Since the invasion, well over 5 million jobs have been lost in Ukraine. Remarkably, Ukraine’s I.T. Industry has remained extremely resistant to the disruption and remains essential to the country’s prosperity, having been responsible for 41.5% of the country’s exports in 2023. The tech sector generates 4% of Ukraine’s GDP and is growing faster than any other goods or services industry in the country. Reflecting their awareness of the importance of the technology sector, Ukrainian students have gravitated towards taking digital and technical courses online. Since the partnership began, seven out the top 10 most popular courses are related to digital and data science skills.
- English for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (University of Pennsylvania)
- Programming for Everybody (Getting Started with Python) (University of Michigan)
- Foundations of Project Management (Google)
- Neural Networks and Deep Learning (DeepLearning.AI)
- Foundations of User Experience (UX) Design (Google)
- English for Career Development (University of Pennsylvania)
- HTML, CSS, and Javascript for Web Developers (Johns Hopkins University)
- Foundations: Data, Data, Everywhere (Google)
- SQL for Data Science (University of California)
- Introduction to Front-End Development (Meta)
